“once uses song and dance in a way I've never experienced in an American musical. When the violins begin to play – and the accordion and the mandolin and the guitars and the cello – the instruments swell into a collection of distinctive voices melded into a single, universal feeling. oncemassages that feeling until it hurts quite exquisitely.”

“a gem of a show. once wins its standing ovations the old-fashioned way: with a love story, great songs, compelling characters and inventive stagecraft. at this point in broadway history, this feels downright revolutionary.”

The Making of once: A New Musical

  • “intensely moving. There are plenty of romantic broadway musicals,
but once is part of a much smaller and more rarefied group: musicals that are actually wise about the joys and anguish of life and love.”

“original and emotionally exhilarating, once is the sort of revivifying breeze nowhere more necessary than on broadway.”

“★★★★! heart-stopping and enthralling. It's a genuine thrill to hear an entire broadway house hushed and focused on the action onstage. And it makes the roar of applause at the end all the more ecstatic.”
