Celebrating Civil Unions
"While there is a lower class, I am in it.
While there is a criminal element, I am of it.
While there is a soul in prison, I am not free."
-Eugene V. Debs-
Without a doubt, May 1st, 2013 will go down as one of the happiest days ever celebrated in a Denver municipal building as the Wellington Webb first floor was filled with people celebrating over a hundred civil unions on the first day the new unions were legal in Colorado. In the midst of midnight May Day snow storm, loving couples, families, friends, and about 135 of their favorite photographers gathered together to ring in a new era in Colorado.
It wasn't the lights so much as the lights in so many eyes that made the Webb Building a circle of the sun as the clock struck midnight and countless dreamed of and longed for days were fianlly celebrated between committed, loving couples who gave Colorado something special to celebrate after generations of efforts on the ballots, in the courts, and ultimately in an historic legislative session.
It was great to see so many familiar faces taking part last Tuesday, including a great representation of House District 2 folks, some sporting oversized "I'm Happy!" buttons.
Thanks to Speaker Mark Ferrandino and Senator Pat Steadman for carrying the bill into law, to Governor Hickenlooper for his longstanding commitment to seeing it on his desk, and to so many gracious couples who let a proud state share in a special moment.
