Updates (posted Monday, March 10, 2014)

Speakers scheduled to address our group between 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. include the following:

  • Former Speaker Andrew Romanoff (roughly 8:00 a.m.)
  • Speaker Mark Ferrandino (roughly 8:15 a.m.)
  • Senator Irene Aguilar (roughly 7:45 a.m.)
  • Senator Pat Steadman
  • Senator Lucia Guzman
  • Senator Mike Johnston (roughly 8:30 a.m.)
  • Former Senate Minority Leader and Lieutenant Governor Sam Cassidy

Location

  • We've had a great response to our Day at the Capitol, and have moved our 8 a.m. gathering 20 yards away to Senate Committee Room 356 (between the elevators on the third floor of the State Capitol).
  • We'll still have our light breakfast treats and coffee outside the Senate Committee Rooms from 7:30-8:00 a.m.
  • Due to the expectation of a capacity crowd, the Joint Senate Memorial Resolution honoring Senator Ken Gordon has been moved from the Senate to the larger House chamber.  Both bodies will convene at 9.  The resolution will be read on the floor of the Senate, then the senators will move to the House to "debate" the resolution with their colleagues in the House.
  • We recommend coming to breakfast outside the Senate Committee Rooms, leaving a coat in the House gallery at 8 a.m. to save a seat, then joining us in SCR 356 for our lineup of great speakers.  We'll plan to wrap up around 8:45 so people can move over to the House gallery and take their seats.

Please take part in a special Day at the Capitol honoring Senator Ken Gordon on Tuesday, March 11th.  The day will feature a full slate of opportunities to talk with our legislators, observe the action on the House and Senate floors, sit in on key committee hearings, and share an optional lunch with other attendees.  Best of all, the day is planned to correspond with the day The Colorado Senate and House of Representatives are scheduled to consider a Senate Joint Memorial honoring Senator Gordon.  The memorial resolution should be a real highlight, as former and current Senate and House members convene on the Senate floor to share their remembrances of Ken.

We expect a great turnout, and we hope you can show your support for Ken’s enduring legacy and for his family, loved ones, friends, past constituents, supporters, and colleagues by attending what promises to be a remarkable and memorable day.

The Day at the Capitol is coordinated by House District 2 and the Public Policy Commitee, both of the Democratic Party of Denver, and it is open to anyone, regardless of where you live or who you affiliate (or don't) with.  We’d love to see you, and your presence would mean a lot as we honor Ken Gordon.  In addition to an unforgettable legacy of work as a citizen activist before and after leaving office, Ken served as both the House Minority Leader and the Senate Majority Leader, leaving an indelible mark at our Capitol and in the minds and hearts of all who knew him, who had him show up at their doors, and who had his rich and thought-provoking e-mails show up in their inbox.

The full details for the schedule are still being finalized, but we anticipate starting the day at 8 a.m., when we’ll be joined by many of the legislators from Denver and beyond as they touch base about their current work at the Capitol and special bills we might be interested in following.  We’ll also get an introduction and overview from Lou Irwin, the Democratic Party of Denver Captain at Large and a policy analyst working with Senator Irene Aguilar at the Capitol.

We’ll have light breakfast, coffee, and juice available outside the chambers for about a half hour before we get started, so please join us for the chance to mingle with friends old and new and to meet many legislators who can’t turn down a complimentary Duffy roll!

By 9 a.m., we’ll move over to the Senate, where we’ll watch the Joint Memorial honoring Ken Gordon.  As time permits, folks can spend the rest of the morning watching proceedings on the House and Senate floors before gathering for lunch at one of the fine eateries within walking distance of the Capitol.  During the afternoon, there will be ample opportunity to sit in on some of the key House and Senate Committee hearings and watch the process of bills getting their first hearings and facing their first hurdle en route to becoming law.

Please feel free to invite any friends who you think might enjoy this Day at the Capitol.  It should be an excellent opportunity to introduce new people to the business of our state legislature, a timely occasion to watch or even participate through testimony at the day’s committee hearings, and a wonderful chance to pay tribute to Senator Gordon, an iconic leader who served the people of his district and of Colorado with great honor and distinction.

If you know you can make it, please RSVP to HD2Officers@gmail.com
